YFS is delivering free home energy community education sessions to help people avoid financial difficulties caused by energy costs.
YFS will offer Home Energy: It makes cent$ workshops in three local libraries during March, as part of the Smart Money Logan 2016 series, a partnership with Logan City Council.
YFS Money Smart program has been providing the 60-90 minute workshops in the Logan community for over a year now.
YFS Money Smart Worker, Christine Robertson said sessions provide practical ways to reduce electricity use, rebate assistance and the available options for people having difficulty paying their account.
“At least three people will come in asking for help with their electricity each day,” Ms Robertson said.
“People come in here scared and asking for help because they need to talk to their energy supplier. They want advocacy. It’s about helping the clients by giving them education and confidence so they will know how to deal with it.”
“We want to educate people before they get into difficulty about the things they can do around their home to reduce their consumption and to also get some information on what they can do themselves if they get into financial difficulty,” she said.
“Most people don’t know how to read their bills so we also teach them how to do it: to check that they haven’t got some unexpected increase in use; what to look for when appliances are breaking down and causing them more energy use, etc.”
This quarter’s sessions will take place at Logan Hyperdome, Marsden and Logan North Libraries. Each session includes an hour of presentation and 30 minutes of questions.
