Nathan* self-referred to YFS in October with an energy debt of around $40,000 while navigating significant financial hardship and ongoing health challenges.

In the few years prior, Nathan had undergone cancer treatment, dialysis, a double transplant, and ongoing reconstructive surgeries. During that time, he had relied on life-sustaining medical equipment that could not be turned off.

After reviewing his finances, Nathan discovered that utility bills had not been paid while a former partner was managing the household finances. Now he had a huge debt, and his only income was the Disability Support Pension (DSP).

Working alongside YFS Financial Hub, Nathan took steps to improve his financial situation. Together, they reviewed his budget, explored hardship supports, negotiated with his energy provider and accessed available grants and concessions.

As a result, Nathan secured more than $6,400 in utility debt relief, set up sustainable repayments, improved his financial capability and self-advocacy, and continued his access to essential energy services during a period of significant medical hardship.

YFS also supported Nathan with emergency relief assistance for food and fuel when he was hit by unexpected car costs, health complications and reduced income during his period of support.

By July 2026, and despite his many difficulties, Nathan successfully exited the service with an improved financial outlook, greater confidence, and a clear pathway for managing future energy costs.
