Joe commenced his legal studies after a successful career abroad working as a chef for twenty years and then managing a construction business back on the Gold Coast.
“When I returned to Australia I finished with hospitality and in 2015 started studying accounting and commerce, then economics, as a mature-age student,” says Joe. “After doing well in a business law subject I combined a Law degree into a double degree.”
After being admitted as a lawyer in Queensland, Joe regularly volunteered at a community legal centre and evening clinics on the Gold Coast, before making the move to YFS Legal to work in law full time.
YFS’ strong reputation, and the meaningful nature of community legal work, meant that when a position became available at YFS Legal, Joe decided to apply.
Joe is committed to the people of Logan. “I find the people genuine, and I love the multicultural aspect of the community. I love our community.”
As well as having many strengths as a community, Joe also recognises the very real challenges many people in the Logan area face.
“Anyone can book an advice session with YFS Legal. We are different to Legal Aid, which must apply an asset test and merit test before seeing someone. We are able to help people who may fall through the cracks because they own a property but don’t have access to funds for legal representation, for instance, or are employed.”
“Providing free legal advice is incredibly rewarding. Sometimes the outcome is already pretty much decided. We pride ourselves on providing a holistic service to support our clients. Helping our clients understand and address their legal issues empowers our clients. People often walk away appreciative”.
Joe is a Generalist Solicitor, providing legal advice on various civil law areas, family and domestic and family violence, employment, and tenancy advice. Joe also supervises a clinic assisting our clients to complete various legal documents.
Joe’s role also involves providing legal representation to Aggrieved persons (people who need protection from domestic and family violence) in domestic violence matters at a local Magistrates Court.
“It is not something we [YFS Legal] receive funding for, but is something YFS Legal is committed to, to support our community. It is one of the most rewarding parts of my job and has been right since I started.
“It might be our client’s first time in court. They may never have had anything to do with the police before, and suddenly, they are given police documents to attend court. A lot of people, understandably, can feel lost in a courtroom. I see the difference that our service makes.”
“Providing a holistic service is an integral part of what we do at YFS Legal. Empowering and advocating for our clients is our focus. Making sure our clients are heard is important.”
