Tammy: Steadfast support

“They are very good people. They have good hearts.”

A kind neighbour and loyal friend, Tammy and her extended family have lived in Logan most of their lives. And while it hasn’t always been easy, Tammy’s deep love for her family has driven her to keep seeking support even in the roughest circumstances.

Tammy first met YFS staff approximately twenty years ago when her mum sought help for Tammy’s drug and alcohol use.

“They helped me get into detox, and I’ve kept coming back because they care.”

Over the years, Tammy has also been supported when she’s experienced homelessness and domestic and family violence.

And when Tammy’s adult daughter needed help, Tammy followed in her mum’s footsteps and brought her to YFS. “I said come; I’ll get you to YFS.”

“I didn’t want the help for me, I wanted it for my daughter. And YFS helped my daughter get into a house. And she’s fine now.”

Even at her lowest periods, Tammy has held on to hope for a brighter future. And she is deeply thankful for YFS’ help navigating support systems across the way.

“I can’t read or write. And YFS has helped with all that. They are very good people. How do I appreciate everything they’ve done?”

Recently, YFS’ Home and Healthy team have been helping Tammy organise assessments so she can access long-term support through the NDIS for a debilitating health condition.

“It took a long time. But [my YFS worker] helped keep everything rolling and now all NDIS papers are done and housing is on the way. Just one more part there.”

Better health support and a path towards stable housing are not the only changes in Tammy’s life – she’s also recently welcomed a new granddaughter. And while Tammy is still taking steps towards healing, her relationships with her children and grandchildren continue to motivate her to keep going.

Lillian Ford: A new chapter

“They didn’t have to do that – to spend so much time with me and reassure and support me. Afterwards I was able to calm down and safely get home, which was a massive thing for me.”
