Not long after, Kila made the decision to move to New South Wales to be with his partner. He continued working and supporting himself while the couple established their life together and welcomed their first child.
When their son was 10 months old, the young family decided to return to Queensland for a fresh start. Having connected with YFS before, Kila knew exactly who he hoped to reconnect with.
“We wanted to start a new life because we had a new child.”
Just two or three days after returning to Queensland, Kila spotted a familiar YFS Homelessness Outreach van at Doug Larsen Park.
“I told my partner, ‘Those are the people,’” Kila shared.
“Those are the angels.”
The Outreach team recognised Kila’s motivation to find work and quickly reconnected him with YFS’ Spark program. Together, they worked to secure important identification documents, including a proof of age card and driver’s licence, removing barriers to employment.
Within a week, YFS’ Spark Housing Lead and Mentor, Mitch, had connected Kila with employment at Teys Australia, where he now works as a meat process worker.
For Kila, work is about more than earning an income. It’s about creating opportunities for his family and building the future he envisioned when he first came to Australia.
“My dream is to work hard, save money, continue studying and support my community back home.”
His partner shares the same determination, and together they are focused on creating opportunities for their family’s future.
“YFS didn’t abandon us or ignore us. They helped us on the spot. I just want to say thank you for giving us a chance to start our life again.”
While Kila has secured employment, he, his partner and their young son continue working with YFS to find stable housing.
