Step by Step

Step by Step is for young parents aged 25 years or younger who live in Logan and are pregnant (in their third trimester) or parenting.  

Young parents and their families all have unique strengths and challenges. At Step by Step, you choose the support that’s right for you to reach your goals and help your family members thrive. 

We offer one-on-one support and guidance, peer spaces to connect with other young parents and their children, team members who specialise in housing, education and employment. All members of the team work closely together to support your family. 

Burrabilly: First Nations families and children

At Step by Step, we work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities. Our support for First Nations families is called Burrabilly (meaning arise).

Burrabilly includes an identified practitioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and children, as well as support for non-Indigenous staff to deliver culturally safe care. Support is tailored to what matters to you and your family, helping you navigate life’s challenges and build on your strengths.

After reaching out to us you will receive a call or text from someone in our Step by Step team. They will explain the program, find out what type of support you are looking for, and let you know your rights and responsibilities. Together, we will begin planning the future you want to create with your family.

We can meet you at your home, a YFS office (or other location), or speak over the phone.

Depending on your situation, we can also introduce you to other young parents via one of our peer groups or help you find the right specialist worker if you have housing, financial, health, or other areas that are important to you.

Support looks different for each family, based on what is important to you. We can help with things like:

• building confidence and skills for parenting and everyday life
• supporting your child’s health, learning and development
• connecting to education, training or employment when you’re ready
• building safe, healthy relationships and accessing support if safety concerns arise
• connecting with other young parents, community activities and specialist services
• finding and maintaining safe, stable housing
• building your independence through practical support, including developing life skills such as budgeting and accessing services.

You’re always in control of what you work on. We’ll check in regularly to see how things are going and adjust goals as your needs change.

We know life with young children can get busy, so if you need to, you can choose to pause the program anytime and return when you’re ready.

Step by Step accepts referrals from community‑based professionals and services, government agencies, and other YFS programs. Referrals may also be made by community organisations and partner services.

All referrals and enquiries are received by Step by Step’s Intake Worker, who responds to requests for support and helps determine the most appropriate pathway.

Step by Step is a voluntary service, and a young parent’s consent is required before a referral can be accepted or support can begin.
