Lauren’s story

Step-by-step, Lauren is standing on her own two feet

“I’m really happy. I love where I’m staying, and I love just being independent and doing my own thing. I have my freedom, I have my own space.”

There are moments in our lives when we need help to put one foot in front of the other.

When 20-year-old Lauren walked through the doors of YFS this time last year, she had a newborn, limited support and had been newly diagnosed with a disability.

In the space of a year, mentors at YFS have supported her to navigate her way through the NDIS process, to build support networks, secure and sustain housing and engage in further study.

She has really taken to her role as a new mum, with regular attendance at YFS’ Bump to Jump playgroup and the Young Mums’ Squad. She’s formed friendships and connections with other young parents, who now interact outside of these structured support groups as well. She has also benefitted from ongoing therapeutic intervention organised by YFS.

Lauren has now graduated with a Certificate 3 in Individual Support, having put in the hard work. She is well on her way to building the future she wants for herself and her little one.
