25 or under and struggling?

You’re not alone. We have three programs that can offer you support.

Our YouthLink program works specifically with young people aged 12 to 21 years who are finding life a bit out of control.

YouthLink provides practical help tailored to each young person’s needs and goals.

How we can help

We work with young people for up to a year who are having trouble with housing, family, school, work or friends to develop and implement a plan to get life back on track.

YFS is experienced in helping young people deal with issues and challenges. Your YouthLink worker can help you work out what you want and how you want to get it. For example we can help you:

  • connect with family and community
  • find a safe, stable place to live
  • engage in school, training or employment
  • manage self harm or alcohol and substance use
  • lead a healthy, violence-free life.

We can also link you with whatever other type of help you need along the way. And if you give us your permission YFS can work with any other people in your life, such as family, friends, school or government agencies.

Who is eligible

Young people aged between 12 and 21 years from the Logan and Redlands areas who are:

  • homeless or at risk of homelessness
  • not at school and not working
  • engaged with Youth Justice or Child Safety or at risk of it
  • disconnected from family and community.

Next Step Plus

Next Step Plus supports young people in out-of-home care to plan for independent adult life. The
team also supports young people who have left care to overcome issues that arise and get on track
to achieve their goals.

How we can help

If you’re in care now: we can help you develop a plan the life you want once you turn 18.

  • We talk to you about what you want and help make it happen
  • We help you involve important people in your life
  • We regularly review progress with you.

If you’ve left out-of-home care: Next Step Plus also works with young people who have left care but
need extra support to develop skills, knowledge and connections to live independently actively
participate in society through employment and connection to community.

We can help you achieve your goals by supporting you to:

  • Enrol into education and training
  • Access health care and legal services
  • Find and maintain housing
  • Build connections
  • Or whatever help you need for your unique situation.

Who is eligible

Young people aged 15 to 25 in Logan, Beaudesert and Bayside who are in out-of-home care or have
had a care experience after they were 12. Young people on the Gold Coast can link with our
colleagues at Gold Coast Youth Service for the same support.

Community Youth Response and Diversion program in Logan

We partner with the ATSICHS, the Department of Youth Justice and Queensland Police Service to deliver the Community Youth Response and Diversion program in Logan.

Keeping young people out of detention and more widely, out of the criminal justice system, has been a priority for us since we opened our doors in 1983.

Together, we deliver a service that furthers that aim by being culturally appropriate and engaging for young people.

How we can help

We head out into the community to where young people are, offering a range of support services such as transport so you can safely head home, and access to a safe place to stay for the night if that’s what you need.

We also deliver follow-up support to meet your ongoing needs, such as connecting you with the type of social, cultural, arts and recreational activities that interest you and inspire your pride.

Look out for our team on the streets of Logan every Friday and Saturday night.

Client story

Last month, nearly two years after disengaging from school, Kai, 17, started his full time construction apprenticeship with Hutchinson Builders.

He had been actively looking for work and things started to change for him after joining YFS’ YouthLink program over a year ago.

Kai feels more independent now. He lives on his own, goes to work every day, talks about his hopes and dreams about his future.

How to use our services

YFS understands it is hard to ring without knowing exactly what to ask for, that’s why we have one central door for all new people, called YFS Connect.
