Sadly, elder abuse is common and it’s often not reported in the media.

The team at Logan’s community legal centre YFS Legal say this form of domestic and family violence happens in more settings than just aged care facilities.

It frequently happens at home.

The World Health Organisation says elder abuse is “a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person.”

It can involve financial, physical, psychological, emotional and sexual abuse or neglect.

Protection orders aren’t just for people in intimate relationships.

Elders who are experiencing abuse can apply for an order at a magistrate’s court or ask a police officer, lawyer or someone they trust to apply on their behalf.

The matter will go to court and a magistrate will make a decision.

While it usually takes a few weeks for the matter to go before the court, urgent orders are available if someone’s safety is at risk.
